The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially filed a petition with the election tribunal to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s victory in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
This announcement was made by the PDP’s state chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, during a news conference held in Benin on Monday.
Aziegbemi expressed disappointment that the party was denied access to inspect election materials but emphasized that the PDP had still proceeded with the petition to reclaim the mandate of the Edo people.
He reassured the public that the journey to restore their votes had commenced and called the election day “the saddest day in the history of Edo State.”
In his statement, Aziegbemi paid tribute to the resilience of the Edo people, who, despite facing intimidation, militarization, and financial inducement, came out en masse to support the PDP.
“We know many of you, and indeed Edolites, would have been wondering why we have not engaged you after the saddest day in the history of Edo State,” he said.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC candidate Monday Okpebholo the winner of the election with 291,667 votes, defeating PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, who secured 247,274 votes.
Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, placed third with 22,763 votes. Okpebholo won in 11 local government areas, while Ighodalo won in seven.
Aziegbemi expressed the party’s determination to ensure that the people’s votes would eventually count.
He promised that the PDP would stand by the people of Edo State and assured them that their voices would be heard.
“We will stand with you all the way, ensuring your voice is heard and your vote is respected,” he declared.
