The Peace in South East Project (PISE-P) has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law, saying that the commission when established will help in rebuilding the region and bring about much needed reconciliation, peace and development.

The organisation also congratulated the bill sponsors, their convener and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu and entire south east lawmakers for their collective effort in ensuring that the reintroduction and passage of the bill by the 10th National Assembly.

PISE-P in a statement signed by its Chairman Media and Publicity, Mary Ikoku stated that the objective of the Act is in line with the core aim of PISE-P which is fostering dialogue and understanding, bridging gaps, dispel misunderstandings, and conflict resolution.

Describing the Tinubu’s assent to the Bill as “historic”, Ikoku said that the act is coming at the right time, as the commission when established will provide employments for the youths, development for the region and will aid in promoting reconciliation among communities and individuals affected by past conflicts.

The Statement read in part, “We congratulate our convener, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu and entire south east lawmakers for sponsoring this key legislation. Their collective effort and commitment in ensuring that the bill was reintroduced and passed by the 10th National Assembly is laudable .

“We also commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the SEDC bill into law. In various ways Mr President has proven his love for the people of the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria and we’re grateful. The objective of the Act is in line with the core aim of PISE-P which is fostering dialogue and understanding, bridging gaps, dispel misunderstandings, and conflict resolution. We are optimistic that the commission when established will help in rebuilding the region and bring about much needed reconciliation, peace and development.

“This law will serve as a catalyst for transformative development, fostering economic growth, and promoting lasting peace in the region.

“We celebrate this triumph with the people of the South-East, who will be the primary beneficiaries of this landmark legislation.

“The bill sought to establish a commission that would be charged with the responsibility to receive and manage funds from the allocation of the federation account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damage suffered by the region as a result of the effect of the civil war after 54 years.

“PISE-P salutes all the lawmakers from the South-East region from the House of Representatives and the Senate who joined the deputy speaker in sponsoring the bill and everyone who contributed to this success, from lawmakers to stakeholders and advocates. Your collective efforts have written a new chapter in the region’s history, paving the way for a brighter future.

“Thank you, President Tinubu, for believing in the South-East’s potential. Thank you, Deputy Speaker Kalu, for your unwavering dedication. Thank you to all who played a role in this remarkable achievement. Together, we look forward to witnessing the positive impact of this law and continuing our collaborative efforts towards a more peaceful and prosperous region”, the statement concluded.
