The Synchronization of Igbo Cosmology with European Dogma: A Useless Trend That Must Stop Among Odinala Adherents

The last decade has witnessed an aggressive campaign for the return to Odinala na Omenala by Ndi Igbo. This movement is part of a wider African renaissance that seeks to reconnect Africans with their roots — spirituality, culture, traditions, and the philosophies of their ancestors. Across the continent, every ethnic group is marching back at its own pace.

For Ndi Igbo, however, this march back to our traditional foundations has produced a rather unpleasant phenomenon: the unhealthy synchronization of Odinala na Omenala with European religions, particularly Christianity.

The Danger of Synchronization

Any serious-minded Odinala adherent or conscious Igbo person who truly seeks to see our people express themselves through ancestral wisdom will strongly reject any attempt to merge Odinala with Christianity. The goal of such synchronization has always been the suppression and supplanting of Igbo spirituality and cosmology in favour of European dogma.

For example, I have seen Ndi Igbo draw false parallels between Mary and Nne Mmiri, or between Udo, Ọgwụgwụ, and Christian (or Roman) deities like Jesus Christ. These comparisons are not only inaccurate but also diminish the dignity of our own cosmology.

Slave Appeal Disguised as Validation

Too often, I observe this synchronization expressed with a subtle timidity — a desire for validation from Christianity. It becomes what I call a “slave appeal to be considered worthy by the colonizer.”

In simple terms, this syncretism seems to say:

“We are returning to the ways of our ancestors, but dear Christian relatives, do not see us as evil. Look — Mary is the same as Nne Mmiri, and Udo is the same as Jesus Christ. We are not worshipping idols; we are worshipping the same beings you worship, only under different names. Please accept us.”

This beggarly attitude is unacceptable if we are serious about fully restoring what makes us Ndi Igbo.

The Case of Nne Mmiri and “Mary”

If you want to discuss the spiritual efficacy of Nne Mmiri (Nne Nwanyị Mmiri), then do so directly — without dragging the Caucasian figure of Mary into the conversation. Yes, research by Igbo scholars such as Professor Catherine Acholonu has suggested that the name “Mary” may have originated from the Igbo root “Mmiri”. Still, it is not noble to use Mary as justification for our communion with Nne Mmiri.

If your intention is truly to lead Ndi Igbo back to Odinala na Omenala, then you must focus squarely on our deities — not dilute them by standing them side by side with foreign icons. To do otherwise is self-sabotage. No culture in the world does that, except colonized Africans.

Lessons from History

If these synchronizations were of any real benefit to Ndi Igbo, the European missionaries would have turned back the moment they discovered our sophisticated and unique spirituality — a foundation which, in fact, influenced many religions around the world.

But instead, they pressed forward, tarnishing our cultures, traditions, philosophies, and science, determined to become overlords of our minds and destinies. Why then should we, in 2025, continue to interpret our cosmology through the lens of the very doctrines that sought to erase it?

A Call for Authentic Restoration

Umu Nnem, it is useless — even dangerous — for any of us to express Igbo cosmology and spirituality through foreign concepts that once suppressed our own. To reclaim the minds of our people, let us define and honour our divinities as they are:

Nne Mmiri, Ala, Ogwugwu, Udo, Chi, Agwu, Ndi Ichie, and others. These are not European deities. They are uniquely ours — Igbo deities, Igbo divinities, Igbo cosmology.

Biko, ka uche anyi di ya.
