The United Kingdom has turned down a formal request by the Nigerian government to transfer former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu back to Nigeria to complete his prison sentence.
Ekweremadu is currently serving a nine-year, eight-month jail term in a UK correctional facility after his 2023 conviction for conspiring to harvest the kidney of a young Nigerian man. The case, which involved his wife and a medical consultant, sparked global reactions and dominated international headlines due to its shocking details.
Nigerian authorities had sought his transfer under existing bilateral arrangements that allow convicted persons to serve their sentences in their home countries. However, UK officials have now communicated that Ekweremadu will not be moved and must continue his imprisonment in Britain.
