A former presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 general elections respectively, Dr Hamza Al Mustapha has paid a visit to the former Vice president of the Federation, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. The visit took place last week shortly after he defected to the Social Democratic Party SDP.

Although discussions were not made public, permutations indicate that the defection of former Governor El Rufai, Al Mustapha’s defection and the visit may not be unconnected with a bigger plan for a 2027 alliance of the northern forces.

Aside from that, the Sunday, March 16th visit of Al Mustapha to Enugu State in South East Nigeria unveiled plans for a North—South-East alliance for the 2027 presidential election.

Dr Al Mustapha, in his tour with his team, paid a courtesy visit to Distinguished Senator Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, where it was specifically hinted that a political alliance between northern Nigeria and South-East was in the offing.

Further discussions were also held in the home of Distinguished Senator Ken Nnamani, during which the relationship between South East and Northern Nigeria were critically reexamined, and all speakers alluded to the fact that the North and South East have always been on a natural alliance.

“We have resumed the process that will lead to the realignment or the restoration of this alliance that started during the days of Nnamdi Azikiwe, which also happened during the period of Shagari and Ekwueme. This is what is being presented and is being looked at”, they said.

Speakers also agreed to the fact that the development of Nigeria is critical and political stability will lead to development. Hence, a very fair and unbiased relationship and alliance is needed to see to the need to restore Nigeria to its growth path.

Everybody agreed that Nigeria has really missed the path of growth due to the fact that a major artery of Nigeria’s economy and growth which is the South East have been seriously damaged or removed from the scheme of things.

“Nigeria had a very interesting and exciting growth experience, while the South East played a major role in driving the economy of the country. Whether you look at it from the military regime or even during the first and second republic, each time the Igbo man was at the centre or driving the economy, Nigeria had always had a very robust economy. The North and Igbos realizing the need for the renewal of this partnership is the reason for this meeting”, the speakers affirmed.

One of the participants who spoke to our correspondent at the end of the meeting, Mr Henry Chibuzor said, “Further discussions and consultations are still going on, it’s not as if any other part of Nigeria will be alienated, but it’s important to know where the whole thing started, because anyone who failed to realize where the rain started beating him will never know where it stopped. So, in reality, we attended the meeting to find out where the problem started and to know how it would be resolved. Pledges were made for other meetings to be held in the coming weeks”, he concluded.
