Anambra, Nigeria – Shocking details have emerged over the assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Anambra State, as her lawyer alleged that a vigilante operative threatened to rape and kill her during the attack.
According to lawyer Cyrus Onu, members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group (Operation Udo Ga-Achi) invaded a lodge in Oba community, accusing corps members of being internet fraudsters. The victim, Jennifer Elobor, pleaded for time to change clothes, but was beaten and threatened. “He beat me and threatened to rape me if I spoke about it,” she said, adding that they also warned she could be killed.
Jungle-journalist.com reports that the operatives reportedly fired shots to scare others and continued intimidation at the NYSC secretariat.
The Anambra State Government confirmed the arrest and suspension of the culprits. Governor Chukwuma Soludo later announced the dismissal of eight operatives, promising to pay the victim’s medical bills, replace her damaged belongings, and tender an apology.
While the Nigerian Bar Association and human rights groups commended the quick action, they demanded prosecution of those involved. Senator Ede Dafinone described the assault as “barbaric,” urging stronger protection for corps members.
Onu maintained that justice must go beyond dismissal, insisting: “Accountability is the only way to prevent this from happening again.”
