A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has issued an order stopping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its planned national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Justice James Omotosho, in his ruling on Friday, restrained the PDP from conducting the exercise pending the determination of a suit filed by three aggrieved members—Hon. Austin Nwachukwu (Imo State Chairman), Hon. Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia State Chairman), and Turnah Alabh George (South-South Secretary).
The plaintiffs alleged that the party violated the Electoral Act, the 1999 Constitution, and its own internal constitution by failing to conduct valid congresses in several states before convening the national convention. They also argued that the PDP did not issue the statutory 21-day notice required by law, and that key procedural requirements, including the proper endorsement of notices, were ignored.
Justice Omotosho ruled that the planned convention would remain suspended until the party complied with all legal and constitutional conditions. The court further ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to receive, publish, or recognise the outcome of any convention conducted under the current circumstances.
“This is not just an internal party issue but a matter of compliance with electoral law,” the judge held, stressing that “no political party should take any step that could render the decision of this court nugatory.”
Major Setback for PDP Leadership Transition
The ruling is a heavy blow to the opposition party’s internal restructuring plans ahead of the 2027 general elections. It halts preparations for a new National Working Committee and delays efforts to reconcile factions battling for control of the PDP.
The judgment also exposes deep divisions within the party, as several state chapters continue to contest the legitimacy of congresses conducted under the current leadership. The court’s decision effectively forces the PDP to restart the process, ensuring every congress and delegate election meets the standards set by law.
Party Reactions and Next Steps
Top PDP officials met immediately after the ruling to review legal options. Sources within the party hinted that an appeal may be filed early next week, even as reconciliation efforts continue behind closed doors.
Some members have welcomed the ruling, describing it as a necessary correction that will restore order and transparency in the PDP. Others see it as a calculated attempt to destabilise the party ahead of 2027.
Analysts, however, say the decision serves as a reminder that internal democracy and strict compliance with electoral procedures are now judicial priorities.
Political Implications
The development leaves the PDP in a period of uncertainty. Without a valid convention, the party cannot lawfully elect or inaugurate new national officers. This may weaken its ability to mount an effective opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the buildup to the next elections.
Political observers note that the ruling underscores a growing judicial scrutiny of party processes and could set a precedent for how internal disputes are handled across all major political parties.
