The people of Edo State deserve to hear from all candidates vying for the position of Governor in the upcoming election.

It is imperative that each party, regardless of their political affiliation, participate in an open and transparent debate, where the citizens can assess the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate’s platform.

The purpose of a gubernatorial debate is to provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas and the promotion of democratic ideals. By engaging in a debate, the candidates demonstrate their commitment to transparency and accountability, and they allow the citizens to make informed decisions about who should lead the state.

Unfortunately, in the past, some political parties have refused to participate in these debates, fearing the exposure of their weaknesses and the potential damage to their electoral prospects.

This trend must be reversed, as it only serves to undermine the democratic process and limit the ability of the citizens to engage with their political leaders.

The Edo State gubernatorial debate should be seen as an opportunity for all parties to showcase their vision for the future, their plans for addressing the state’s challenges, and their commitment to serving the people.

The failure of some political parties to engage in debates has been a cause for concern in Nigeria and around the world. For example, in the 2019 presidential election, former President Muhammadu Buhari refused to participate in a televised debate, citing security concerns.

In other countries, such as the United States, presidential debates are seen as a crucial part of the democratic process, with both candidates expected to engage in vigorous debate over issues ranging from the economy to foreign policy.

In contrast to the Edo State gubernatorial race, the recent U.S. presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump featured several high-profile debates, including one in which the candidates clashed over issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice, and healthcare reform.

This contrast serves to highlight the importance of robust political debate, not just in the U.S. but around the world. By engaging in these debates, candidates not only demonstrate their knowledge and skills but also their willingness to be held accountable to the people they seek to represent.

“Democracy is not a spectator sport. It is a participation sport. It is about getting up, standing up, and making your voice heard.” – Maria Teresa Kumar.

This quote captures the essence of the importance of a gubernatorial debate in Edo State. It reminds us that democracy is not just about voting, but about engaging with our political leaders and holding them accountable.

The upcoming election in Edo State offers a chance for all parties to engage in a debate, and for the people of the state to make their voices heard.
