The Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu Prof Gregory Ibe has described the recent signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law as “one of the greatest legacies and the best dividend of democracy President Mohammed Buhari will bequeath Nigerians”.

Speaking on the heels of the hallmark assent given to the crucial bill, Prof Ibe commended President Buhari for hearkening to the yearnings of Nigerians. He also paid glowing tribute to members of the national assembly for their diligence and forthrightness in carefully crafting the amended act with substantial contributions from the people.

According to Prof Ibe, “The recent signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law is definitely one of the greatest legacies and the best dividend of democracy President Mohammed Buhari will bequeath Nigerians. I want to commend both Mr President and honorable members of the two arms of the National Assembly for achieving this laudable feat, which will surely positively alter the dynamics of politics in our country. Credit should also be extended to members of Civil Society Organizations for their persistent activism in pursuit of electoral reforms”.

Sequel to the development, Prof Ibe therefore enjoined Nigerians to leverage the provisions of the different sections and clauses of the new electoral act amendment law to institutionalize globally acceptable democratic norms and principles in subsequent elections. He particularly charged eligible voters in Abia state to be encouraged by the development to prepare to participate in the forthcoming 2023 election since according to him, “confidence will be restored to the electoral process by the new law”.

In his words, ”I want to particularly encourage Umunnem ndi Abia to shun political apathy, arm themselves with their Permanent Voters Cards(PVC) to enable them participate in the process of taking our state to a brand new level in 2023, knowing for sure that through the provisions of the amended electoral law, sanity and integrity will be restored to the elections and their vote will definitely count. Without any shadow of doubt this is a good time to be an Abian”, he concluded.
