The fate of Labour Party in Enugu State appears to be hanging in the balance, following the deployment of several billboards bearing the campaign slogans and images of Captain Evarest Nnaji (Odengene), who is in contest as a governorship candidate in the upcoming 2023 elections in the state.
In key areas like Ogui Road, Abakpa Junction by 82 Division and other places, the massive billboards have been mounted to inform Enugu people that Odengene as he is fondly called, is still in the race.
In May 2022, Nnaji had stepped down in the guber race for the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, but return to the race shortly after to purchase forms from Labour Party to run for the elections.
There has been some crises in the Labour Party, as Chijioke Edeoga had claimed to have won in the party primaries held in August, but Nnaji had gone to court to challenge the conduct of the primaries that excluded him.
On November 9, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja nullified the nomination of Mr. Chijioke Edeoga as the candidate of the Labour Party, and ordered a repeat of another primary election within 14 days.
Strangely, wvn though INEC had gone for Appeal to challenge the verdict, Chijioke Edeoga, who has been campaigning for months now, did not join INEC in the suit, until the 14 days window for it elapsed.
The deployment of the billboards in the city shows that Odengene, who started the ‘Charity Begins At Home’ campaigns is still very much in the race.
