Nigeria’s kitchen queen, Hilda Baci, has shaken Lagos to its core after completing what is now touted as the world’s biggest jollof rice challenge. The spectacle, staged on Friday at the Eko Hotel and Suites, saw the celebrity chef stir a 22,619-litre monster pot with 250 bags of rice, pulling tens of thousands of fans, foodies, and content creators into what turned into a carnival of culture.
With the challenge now wrapped, the entire nation is on standby as the Guinness World Records (GWR) prepares to deliver its verdict.
On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, hailed Hilda’s feat as “another demonstration of Nigeria’s global excellence.” Represented by the Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, the minister described the effort as a collective national victory, praising her attention to hygiene, precision, and determination.
“Her dedication to excellence and her unrelenting pursuit of greatness exemplify the Nigerian spirit that the world has come to appreciate,” Idris declared.
The government also pledged support for similar initiatives that project Nigeria’s creativity and talent across the globe. Idris urged Nigerian youths to emulate Baci’s discipline, reminding them that the world is watching.
The event itself was a spectacle. Over 20,000 registered attendees stormed the venue, with gates opening as early as 8:30 a.m. Though the cooking started later than planned, the atmosphere was electric. Vendors sold local snacks, musicians played, and influencers live-streamed the moment, turning the grounds of Eko Hotel into a giant food festival.
Security operatives and medical teams kept order while fans lined up, eager for a taste of the historic jollof.
For Hilda Baci, this is not her first dance with global fame. In 2023, she broke into the Guinness Book of Records with her 93-hour cookathon, instantly becoming a household name across Nigeria and beyond.
This latest attempt, however, is more than just food — it is cultural pride. Jollof rice, a beloved dish across West Africa, has long been at the heart of Nigeria and Ghana’s friendly rivalry. With this mega feat, Hilda may have just shifted the bragging rights.
Now, all eyes are on Guinness World Records. Will Nigeria clinch it again? The nation waits.
