Enugu, Nigeria — The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the nonviolent pursuit of Biafra’s independence, as the group commemorates its 24th anniversary on September 13, 2025.
In a solemn statement issued by MASSOB leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, the organization paid tribute to its fallen members—men and women who, according to the group, were “brutally killed by armed security agents” while peacefully advocating for self-determination. The anniversary also served as a moment of reflection for the families of these victims, many of whom, Madu said, remain “traumatized” or “living ghosts of themselves.”
“Our long walk to freedom can never be jeopardized, compromised or corrupted,” Madu declared. “We shall never relent in our nonviolent Biafra struggle because the truth shall always prevail over falsehood.”
MASSOB emphasized that its agitation stems from decades of what it describes as systemic marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria—spanning political, economic, academic, religious, and cultural spheres. The group asserted that Nigeria’s failure to achieve true nationhood, peace, and equity since independence has only deepened the legitimacy of the Biafran cause.
The statement accused the Nigerian government of responding to Biafran activism with “repressions, persecutions, killings and detention,” driven by fear of confronting the truths Biafra represents.
As MASSOB enters its 25th year, the group insists that its mission remains unchanged: a peaceful but resolute campaign for the restoration of Biafra, rooted in the principles of nonviolence and historical justice.
