Abia, Nigeria — October 16, 2025
Chief Emeka Kalu, founder of the Emeka C. Kalu (ECK) Foundation and a 2027 senatorial aspirant for Abia North, has publicly expressed appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his commitment to restoring electricity to Bende Local Government Area (LGA).
The governor’s announcement on October 16 marks a crucial step toward ending the decade-long blackout affecting Bende and neighboring Ohafia communities.
‘Talk and Do’ Leadership in Action
In his statement, Chief Kalu praised Governor Otti’s responsive and inclusive leadership, describing him as a “Talk and Do” leader who listens to the people and delivers tangible results. He said the inclusion of Bende in the state’s ongoing power restoration drive has rekindled hope among residents.
He also noted that the initiative reflects the governor’s commitment to equitable development across Abia, aligning with his promise to ensure no community is left behind.
Otti’s Broader Power Reforms
Governor Otti’s recent electricity reform agenda includes the signing of the Abia State Mini-Grid Regulation Framework, aimed at attracting private energy investment. His administration is also negotiating a stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and plans to redistribute excess power from the Aba Integrated Power Plant to underserved LGAs.
These projects are expected to benefit communities across Abia North and Central, including Bende, which has suffered years of neglect and infrastructural decay.
Political Undercurrents in Abia North
Chief Kalu’s commendation comes amid rising political tension in Abia North, as Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu—who represents Bende at the national level—has criticized Otti’s administration despite failing to address the area’s prolonged electricity crisis.
Observers say Chief Kalu’s remarks not only show appreciation for Otti’s developmental strides but also highlight his alignment with grassroots priorities ahead of the 2027 senatorial race.
